Real ID
Time is of the essence for Motor Vehicle officials working towards Real ID compliance. Under the Real ID Act, passed in 2003, states have a short timeframe to meet national standards mandated by the federal government, including:
- Nationwide standards on driver's licenses
- Authentication of all identification documents
- Ten year storage of citizen identification documents in a digital format
- The creation of databases accessible to all other states and the federal government
In preparation, states will have to revamp their entire DMV system to be compliant with the Real ID requirements - but the question is how? The Department of Homeland Security has only recently issued regulations specifying how states should implement the mandatory federal standards. Furthermore, with the latest election results, funding is uncertain.
Additionally, 240 million people, who already have licenses, will be required go back to their local DMVs and obtain the new federal identification card. Lines will be long and increased frustration is inevitable, but this can be mitigated if agencies nationwide are able to seamlessly update their current DMV system with a new system that addresses the upcoming demands, satisfies federal standards, and protects private information.
